Au trecut acele vremuri în care controlai portbagajul mașinii pentru a vedea dacă roata de rezervă este în stare bună. Astăzi, această dotare este considerată opțională, iar mulți producători nu o oferă.
De ce? Conform unui studiu realizat de AAA în SUA, din goana pentru consumuri mici și emisii reduse, producătorii scapă de kilogramele în plus. Iar roata de rezervă face parte din strategia producătorilor de a micșora masa totală a vehiculelor.

Conform aceluiași studiu, 36% dintre mașinile vândute pe teritoriul SUA în 2015 nu au o roată de rezervă, ci un kit de reparație. Acest lucru este cu atât mai trist cu cât, în 2006, doar 5% dintre mașinile noi veneau cu un astfel de kit.
În plus, un astfel de kit îți poate provoca daune majore în portofel. Dacă pana pe care o ai nu poate fi reparată cu kit-ul din dotare atunci ai două opțiuni: fie chemi pe cineva în ajutor, fie mergi așa până la primul service. Oricare soluție o alegi este mult mai costisitoare decât schimbarea roții cu cea de rezervă.
